David Hanes (b. 1987, Canada/USA) is an artist based between London and Berlin. His work begins outdoors, with small observational sketches that hold the immediacy of place and feeling. With the passage of time, these mementos are filtered through memory, distance, and recollection and are transformed in the studio into oil paintings or watercolours. Recalling the spirit of early modern painters, his practice offers a quiet resistance to disconnection, holding to the belief that to witness the world with feeling is itself a radical act.
